Double Knitting in the Round

If you can knit and purl (and have a little sense of adventure), you can learn to double-knit! In this presentation, we'll start with a two-color invisible cast-on, work the basic double-knitting technique, and then finish with a Kitchener bind-off to match the cast-on.

Fana is a reversible cowl featuring traditional sweater motifs from the Fana region of Norway. These are customarily done in stranded knitting in red or green on white, but here are worked in the Double Knitting technique, with marine blue reflecting the coastal origins of the design.
A great first double-knit project--since it’s worked in the round, you don’t have to worry about closing the edges or reading charts backwards!

Pattern has options for a single loop (shown on model) or double. Instructions for adjusting height and circumference are in pattern. Cowl starts with a two-color invisible cast-on. Body is done in charted two-color double knitting. Top is closed with a Kitchener bind-off, either on one needle or two.

I'm a designer and teacher based in Southern California. I love cables and any kind of colorwork that's not stranded.

After teaching for many years at my LYS, I designed my first sweater and sold it to a yarn company.

And just as I loved learning new techniques as an adventurous beginner, I did the same with designing. I soon added cable, mosaic, vertical stranding, and double knitting designs to my portfolio.

I love puzzling out a pattern and then writing clear instructions supplemented with YouTube videos demonstrating the techniques. My designs have appeared in Vogue Knitting, KnitPicks Homestead Cables, and numerous yarn company collections.
