What to Knit Next? Grow Your Knitting Practice

Kavitha Raman • CraftDoodling Designs

Watch Time: 19 minutes

Many new knitters wonder, “What should I knit next after learning the knit and purl stitches?” The truth is, they can knit “almost anything”. While skill levels like beginner, intermediate, or advanced (as defined by groups like the Craft Yarn Council) can be helpful, they don’t need to limit your choices. Knitting is a lifelong journey of learning, and your curiosity is your best companion. With an open mind and a willingness to explore, you can build a deeply fulfilling and personal knitting practice.

The presentation explains the knitting practice as a triangle with three interconnected elements

Creativity – the joy and personalization that comes with experience.

Confidence – the mindset and trust in their hands, and

Skill – the technical progress they’re aiming for.

I have been knitting for about 20 years and designing under the name CraftDoodling Designs for more than 6 years. Designing allows me to explore fibers and techniques while engaging my math skills in a creative way. I enjoy working with textures, neutral colors, and simple, clean lines in my designs. Over time, I am gradually discovering my personal style and cultivating an eye for both comfort and aesthetics. For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching at my LYS and at festivals, and I’m deeply grateful for the learning, growth, and connections that knitting brings to my life.
